Mandate of Department

1. Department of Science and Technology and Waste Management (DS&T&WM) deals, with the promotion and popularization of Science and Technology in the State of Goa through various Schemes. Under the Schemes financial grants are sanctioned and released to various researchers/NGOs in the field of S&T/Educational Institutions/research Institution etc to take up research projects/ programmes/workshops/seminars/exhibitions in the field of Science and Technology. Also DS&T&WM is the nodal Department to manage and treat/dispose various types of wastes generated in the State in safe and scientific manner.

2. The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) under the administrative control of DS&T&WM is a special purpose vehicle established to deal with the Management/treatment and safe disposal of various types of Wastes generated in the State of Goa GWMC is mandated with setting up and operation Solid Waste and other Waste Management Facilities in the State as well as collection of all plastic waste along the Highways and District roads and its safe disposal. GWMC is also declaration nodal agency for condemnation and disposal of all obsolete/scarp items including vehicles from Government Departments/autonomous bodies etc. GWMC is fully funded by DS&T&WM.

3. Goa State Council for Science and Technology (GSCST) , which is registered under society’s Registration Act, 1986, is also working under the DS&T&WM. The State Council is funded by Central Ministry and partly by State Government. The main function of the Council is to assist and support State Government in implementing various programmes/projects to promote and popularize Science and Technology in the State Council implements various programmes/schemes sponsored by the Central as well as state Government for promotion of Science in High Schools/Higher Secondary/Colleges/University as well as for general public.

GSCST, under the Patent Information Centre’s, is entrusted processing and GI applications for various Goan produce, in the GI Registry at Chennai.

4. The Goa State Innovation Council (GSInC) is constituted by the Government and is functioning under the Department of Science and Technology and Waste Management. It is funded by DS&T&WM. The main functions of the GSInC is to encourage young innovators in registering their ideas through various Schemes/programmes. It also extends support /assistance in provisional Patent filing.
